Lead Co-Investigator WP4

Translating Research into Practice | Connected Cities Lab, The University of Melbourne

I am Professor of Global Urban Politics at the Melbourne School of Design (MSD), the University of Melbourne, whilst working with Alex Apsan Frediani leading KNOW’s Work Package 4, focused on knowledge translation between research and practice.

Along with my role at the MSD, I am also Senior Fellow of the Chicago Council (Global Cities) on Global Affairs, and a Senior Fellow for the Bosch Foundation/GPPi Global Governance Futures programme. I am currently one of three co-chairs for the Nature Sustainability international expert panel on science and the future of cities.

I was previously a Professor of diplomacy and Director of the UCL City Leadership Laboratory at University College London, a Fellow of the Programme for the Future of Cities at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow at the Center on Public Diplomacy at the University of Southern California.

I have also taught at the Australian National University, University of Canberra and National University of Singapore and worked for International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL), Kimberley Process for conflict diamonds, and the European Commission’s response to pandemic threats. I have also served as an expert advisor on city diplomacy for the World Health Organisation and the World Bank group. I hold a PhD (Regulation, Justice, and Diplomacy) from the Australian National University.

The MSD is tasked with understanding and providing support to KNOW partners as to the international dimension of this science-policy connection, looking at the role of multilateral systems (e.g. UN agencies) in shaping the ways knowledge for urban equality is mobilised in practice.
