YANGON
Understanding the contribution of community-led housing to the reduction of urban inequality in Yangon
city project
Working across three levels of Community-Led Housing (CLH) models, our team is seeking to address rapid urbanisation, growing population, land reforms and inadequate policies. In Yangon informal settlements are a manifestation of inequality where several forms of exclusion from formal systems, like legal recognition of tenure, the status of citizenship and the provision of urban services, are concentrated in informal settlements.
Although in Myanmar poverty has reduced at a national level, inequalities in urban centres have been increasing. The team is working with three models of CLH. The Woman for the World model (11 case studies), the multi-stakeholder model in Yoma, and a government assisted model. The aim of these investigations is to build a case for the institutionalisation of CLH processes, increasing awareness of CHL solutions among different publics and authorities to challenge the political and social manifestations of inequality.
